Description

Part A:   In VoIP – Fundamentals, students will gain a fundamental understanding of Voice over Internet Protocol communications.  The course begins with an introduction to the VoIP networking world.  Topics include; advantages and challenges of implementing VoIP, Quality of Service (QOS) factors, and regulatory issues.  The course progresses through a Telecommunications primer in which students learn basic telephony concepts, including analog and digital signal fundamentals, analog to digital conversion, signal encoding, modulation and multiplexing techniques, synchronous and asynchronous network technologies, and the fundamentals of packet switching networks.  Finally, the course takes an in-depth look and basic VoIP networking as it applies to the various hardware and software elements, types of servers used, applications and services.


Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:


Part A: 
·        List and discuss advantages and challenges of VoIP implementation.

·        Define Quality of Service (QoS) and list contributing factors.

·        Describe how analog signals are converted to digital signals

·        List and describe the various types of modulation, encoding, and multiplexing
         schemes used for analog and digital signals.

·        Describe how data is processed in packet switching networks.

·        List and describe the different types of VoIP client devices and discuss their
          applications.

·        Describe how VoIP interfaces with the Public Switch Telephone Network
         (PSTN).

·        List and describe the various types of servers used in VoIP networking.
