Course: PC103: Safety Grounding and Switching (NERC hrs) Printable version
Description

This course provides a comprehensive understanding of the theory, application and procedures for working near energized and de-energized high voltage equipment to minimize the risk of injury.  Both overhead and underground systems are discussed.  The theory and proper procedures for "Single Point" or "equipotential" grounding are also discussed.  The course starts with a general discussion of regulatory requirements including NEC, NESC and OSHA.  Students learn the concepts of Ground Potential Rise, Touch and Step potentials and personal protective equipment (PPE).  Switching and tagging procedures are covered along with PPE testing processes and vehicle safety.

This course is part of APT's Electric Power Proficiency Certification Program.

Learning Outcomes

  • The student gains in-depth understanding of all safety aspects related to the electrical power industry
  • The students are able to identify potential hazards found in the work site and at home
  • The critical most vulnerable safety hazards at the work site are explained in great detail to prepare students for safe working practices around electric facilities
  • The student becomes familiar with proper personal safety protection equipment and required assurance testing
  • Safety management programs are discussed to give students a perspective of injury and near miss accident investigations
